CASESTUDY 8. MYSPACE - VICE

MYSPACE – VICE MAGAZINE

MySpace is a popular social networking website in which audiences can create their own personal profile page offering an interactive, user-submitted network of friends, personal profiles, blogs, groups, photos, music and videos internationally.

CONTENTS OF THE VICE MYSPACE PROFILE
Vice is a free glossy magazine that covers contemporary independent arts and youth culture. The magazine's readership is comprised of young postcollegiate bohemians, often labelled "hipsters." Known for its controversial content, it often strikes a sardonic and ironic pose on debauchery, sex, drugs, violence, and social issues involving race and economic class.

Blurbs, blogs, multimedia
In the top left corner of the page is a box containing the profiles title (VICE MAGAZINE), default picture (the current issue) and a brief summary of the genre, where they are situated (United Kingdom, London), the number of profile views (138184), the date last logged in (20/04/07) and the tagline “VICE: publishing, films, tv, recordings, online”

Beneath this is a box containing a list of different ways to get in contact with vice magazine and the option to add them as a friend, to a group, as a favorite or forward them to a friend.

The profile contains an ‘About VICE MAGAZINE’ section in which they give a brief introduction to how the magazine got started up, links to their official website and the advertisement for an up-coming tour they are running.

Running down the left hand side this is a section containing general information on vice magazine containing promotional videos and photographs.

Friend Space
The Friends Space contains a count of a user's friends, a "Top Friends" area, and a link to view all of the user's friends. The VICE has chosen 8 friends to be displayed on their profile in the "Top Friends" area.

Comments
Below the Friends Space is the "comments" section, wherein the user's friends may leave comments, photos or videos for all viewers to see.

Music
MySpace profiles for musicians are different from normal profiles in that artists are allowed to upload MP3 songs. Unsigned musicians can use MySpace to post and sell music, which has proven popular among MySpace users.

The vice magazine myspace page has used this feature to promote songs from a band called The Black Lips an indie pscyhedlic rock band who are signed to their label VICE RECORDS.
Beneath this they also have a list of upcoming shows for the next few months of The Black Lips, other bands on their label and the club nights that they run ‘VICE KILLS’.

Bulletins
Bulletins are posts that are posted on to a "bulletin board" for everyone on a MySpace user's friends list to see.

The VICE myspace page has used this a service for delivering information on upcoming shows and events, updates to their site, competitions and new issues of the magazine.

Groups
MySpace has a Groups feature which allows a group of users to share a common page and message board. Groups can be created by anybody, and the moderator of the group can choose for anyone to join, or to approve or deny requests to join.

Pictures
By clicking on their default picture you are able to see more pictures which they have uploaded to the page which include covers of past issues, photos from the ‘vicelive’ tours and photography featured in the magazine. By enlarging the individual pictures you can see a list of comments left on it by previous visitors.

CASESTUDY 9. VLOGS - YOUTUBE

YOU TUBE – LONELYGIRL15

YouTube is a popular video sharing website where users can upload, view, and share video clips. Videos can be rated, and the average rating and the number of times a video has been watched are both published.
The wide variety of site content includes movie and TV clips and music videos, as well as amateur content such as videoblogging and short original videos.

The site is praised as one the most user friendly sites on the Internet. Unregistered users can watch most videos on the site while registered users have the ability to upload an unlimited number of videos. Related videos, determined by the title and tags, appear to the right of the video. In the second year, the site gave users the ability to post responses and subscribe to any registered user.

SOCIAL IMPACT OF YOUTUBE

Internet celebrities
YouTube's popularity has led to the creation of many YouTube Internet celebrities, popular individuals who have attracted significant publicity in their home countries from their videos.

Band and music promotion
YouTube has also become a means of promoting bands and their music. One such example is OK Go which got a huge radio hit and an MTV Video Music Awards performance out of the treadmill video for Here It Goes Again.

LONELYGIRL15

lonelygirl15 is an interactive web-based video serial centering around the life of a fictional teenage girl named Bree, whose YouTube username is "lonelygirl15".

The series is presented through short, regularly-updated video blogs posted by the fictional characters, as well as through an optional alternate reality game.

Lonelygirl15 debuted on YouTube as a "real" 16-year-old video blogger. In her earliest videos, she posted video replies to and name-dropped popular YouTubers, which attracted the attention of their fans. Her video blogs eventually became popular in their own right, and attracted a massive following. To further the initial illusion that Bree was a real girl, a MySpace page was set up for her and she began meaningfully corresponding with many of her fans, but it was eventually outed by suspicious viewers as a hoax featuring a fictive character played by an actress named Jessica Rose.

‘HOUSE ARREST’

HOW DOES IT RELATE TO AUDIENCES?
- Appeals to a wide audience as anyone can watch/upload videos
- Any type of software can be used to create a vlog -no need for high-tech expensive equipment
- Has many uses and gives the audience an opportunity to showcase their work –can show off talents/create personal blog/ present short films/ plays
- It is made up of user-created content
- The audience is creating the media and consuming it at the same time

HOW DOES IT RELATE TO INSTITUTIONS?
- Youtube acts as a search engine and archive for vlogs posted worldwide
- Users create the content by having the ability to up-load, share and view clips
- Youtube is successful for its user-friendly approach and by the idea that it's audience play a key part in running and contributing to the site

KEY CONCEPTS OF THEORY:
Interaction -

Reach/democratisation - anyone can post a vlog and all have the potential to be exhibited on a large scale across the web

CASE STUDY 10 - PODCASTING

PODCASTING
A podcast is a digital media file, or a series of such files, that is distributed over the Internet for playback on portable media players and personal computers.
The term "podcast" is a blend of the name of Apple's portable music player, the iPod, and broadcast.

Podcasting is a term that was devised as a crisp way to describe the technology used to push audio content from websites down to consumers of that content, who typically listen to it on their mp3 players at their convenience. This allows the media is able to be scheduled around the audience putting them in an autonomous role giving control over how they personally consume this media.

This includes concepts of theory such as:

PORTABILITY as this technology enables us to consume media on the move and where we choose – podcasts are a type of ‘streaming media’ which means that it is continuously received by, and normally displayed to, the end-user whilst it is being delivered by the provider allowing them to be watched in real time

IMMEDIACY as it is instant self-service technology
- Podcasters' web sites may offer direct download or streaming of their content, a podcast is distinguished from other digital media formats by its ability to be downloaded automatically.

A NON-LINEAR experience as the audience is given the choice of how to consume the media and in what order

PERSONALISATION as the podcasts are selected based on the consumers individual desire and provides a private experience

NARROWCASTING since the audience for a podcast is often specific and sharply defined

Podcasting's initial appeal was to allow individuals to distribute their own "radio shows," but the system quickly became used in a wide variety of other ways, including the distribution of:
Public services
Education
Entertainment
News
Music
Publicity and marketing
Health

USER GENERATED CONTENT
Podcasts are predominantly user-generated content (UGC) refers to various kinds of media content that are produced or primarily influenced by end-users, as opposed to traditional media producers, licensed broadcasters and production companies. It reflects the expansion of media production through new technologies that are accessible and affordable to the general public.
User-generated content can employ a combination of open source, free software, and flexible licensing or related agreements to further diminish the barriers to collaboration, skill-building and discovery.

VIDEO PODCASTS
Video podcasts (sometimes shortened to vidcast or vodcast) which are the online delivery of video on demand allowing users to select and watch video content over a network as part of an interactive television system

Video podcasts are an evolution specialized for video, evolved from the generally audio-based podcast and referring to the distribution of video where the RSS feed is used as a non-linear TV channel to which consumers can subscribe using a PC, TV, set-top box, media center or mobile multimedia device.

RUSSELL BRAND ON BBC RADIO 2
My example of an audio podcast is the best of the Russell Brand on BBC Radio 2, with weekly highlights selected from his weekly Saturday night show from 9-11pm which is available to subscribe to. I downloaded this as a piece of free software from the itunes podcast library. I listened to one of the first of Russell's Hawaii shows where the listener finds out what he’s been getting up to and how he's settling in to life on the south pacific while he is working on his new film.
HOW DOES IT RELATE TO AUDIENCES?
- enables the development of niche audiences with specialist interests
- podcasts provide a personal experience
- the consumer can listen/watch to a range of media: radio/film/poetry/music
- the audience download content themselves –control what want to watch/listen to
- Downloading/sending out content on a worldwide network –choice accessibility
- Subscribe –by doing this you can get programmes downloaded automatically from the broadcasters
- there is the freedom to listen to what you want where you want
- they offer an alternative to music to put on your mp3 player
- they can be downloaded straight to mp3 player –replacing cd and radio

HOW DOES IT RELATE TO INSTITUTIONS?
- Broadcasters can distribute programmes worldwide
- Programmes use a form easily played on mp3 players –replacing radio/cd players which these programmes would previously be played on
- The web offers a worldwide audience –good publicity, potential to be downloaded and consumed in large amounts
- podcasts has reintroduced audio programmes to new technologies
- broadcasters can keep a fixed regular audience through subscriptions to the podcast

CASESTUDY 12. CONVERGED PORTABLE TECHNOLOGY - PSP

PSP - “ENTERTAINMENT ON THE MOVE”
Official Sony PSP website

WHAT IS IT?

Launched in September 2005, the Sony PSP (PlayStation Portable) is the next step in entertainment in that it brings film, music, photos and games fans their own portable console.

Packed with cutting-edge technology, including a high capacity UMD player, content downloads and online functions, PSP redefines media on the move.

‘PLAYSTATION IN YOUR POCKET’
The PSP offers a range of gaming experiences from quick pick-up-and-play games to indepth challenges that span all genres, meaning there is something for everyone.

It is the natural successor to both the Sony Playstation (1995) and the PS2 (2000), which expanded the games/CD format to include DVD playback.

‘WHEREVER YOU GO –YOUR ENTERTAINMENT SHOULD GO WITH YOU’
According to the PR, PSP is not only about gaming or movies, but rather endless possibilities. The concept is simple – wherever you go, your entertainment should go with you.

At home or on the move, PSP is designed to open up a wealth of new opporunities, from high-quality 3D game-play to full-length feature movies. It also provides the ability to listen to music or to display your photographs at any time.

For the technically-minded, a PSP comes in a black colour, with a 16:9 widescreen TFT LCD centered in a sleek ergonomic design with a high-quality finish that fits comfortably in the hands.

It also comes complete with the basic functions of a portable player such as built-in stereo speakers, exterior headphone connector, brightness control and sound mode selection. Keys and controls inherit the same operability of PlayStation® and PlayStation 2, familiar to fans all over the world.

One of the most significant uses for the PSP is its ability to play feature-length movies – a capability that is rapidly becoming embraced by all the major film studios as they seek to release many of their past and present film titles in a UMD (Universal Media Disk) format (a small but high-capacity optical medium, enabling game software, rich with full-motion video and other forms of digital entertainment content, to be stored.)

ENHANCING & ADAPTING YOUR PSP
There is also the idea that the PSP can always be enhanced by: downloading software updates such as disc-load speed and thumbnail images, buying additional features such as ‘remote play’ connecting the PSP to the PS3, ‘game sharing’ to other PSP systems and transfer or synchronize data between, your PC, digital camera or PSP.

Owners can also purchase many of the accessories available to adapt the product to their own needs and get the most out of their PSP such the car adaptor, pouch and wrist strap or UMD pouch and cloth.

This type of convergence which the PSP features is very popular. For the consumer it means more features in less space, while for the media institutions it means remaining competitive in the struggle for market dominance and creating demand for new products.

However, convergence can have its downside. Particularly in their initial forms, converged devices are frequently less functional and reliable than their component parts (e.g. a DVD may perform better on a traditional DVD player than on a games console).

Further, as single devices address a wide spectrum of consumer needs, breakdowns and problems become more likely, and more disruptive to the consumer. The greater the degree of convergence in a device, the more vulnerable consumers are to the failure of that device and face more complex user-interfaces.

KEY CONCEPTS OF THEORY:
convergence
portability
flexibility/convenience
personalisation
non-linear

CASESTUDY 11. FAN WEBSITE - THE SPICE GIRLS

'SPICE GIRLS FANATIC'

Spice Girls fanatic is a fansite created by fans of the legendary 90’s girl band The Spice Girls.

A brief introduction to the site is given on the homepage:
“During their world domination throughout the 90s and into the 21st century, the Spice Girls have won over millions of fans with infectious music beats and transformed a generation of "80's babies" into hardcore worshippers and clinically obsessed fanatics. Under the influence? We hope so. While they've lost fans along the way; many suffering from suicidal depression [as of May 31, 1998] or having allegedly "grown up," and now prefer crap music, a portion of us have remained dedicated since day one. From "zig-a-zig-ah" to "Goodbye," the Spice Girls have poisoned countless lives of unsuspecting fans who don't seem to mind. Whether your prefer Scary, Baby, Ginger, Posh or Sporty, hold your head up- you're high class and better than everyone else! You rock, you Spice Girls fanatic.”

THE HOMEPAGE:
